MALARIA (AGUE) = Benjamin rush told of a swamp disease, but didn't tell that the swamp dweller carried it, the mosquito. Many men got malaria from a mosqutio bite, Lewis treated it with quinine which is Peruvian or Cinchona bark and Rush's pills.
RHEUMATISM = This occurrs when the cold makes the body disfunction. Clark and many other men had this the whole journey. One morning when Cark tried to get up he couldn't because he couldnt' move his neck. Lewis treated this with layers of flannel and warm rocks.
STD'S AND SYPHILIS = Sexually transmitted diseases and syphilis were treated with mercury on lasions untill signs of mercury poising occurred. They did this treatment on three men.
FLU - COLD AND FEVER = Probably everyone on the expadition had one of these at one point in time, this was treated by blood letting and sulpher or rush's pills. Sacagawea
had a near death experiance when she came down with high fever, weak pulse, irregular breathing, and twiching. lewis the main docter wasnt there so she had to wait until he got back. lewis gave her 2 doses of bark and opium and water with sulpher and iron which made her get better
VOMITING WITH STOMACK AND BOWEL PAIN = This occurred a lot during the trip. Lewis prescribed rush's pills with some of the many laxiaives in the medical kit. 1 MAN DIED OF APPENDICITUS ON THE EXPADITION, this is when your appendix erupts sending poisons throughout your body.
BOAT ACCIDENTS = Most men couldnt swim on the core of discovery which made boating dangerous. on April 13, 1805 3 men and sacagawea's boat started to go out of control, they lost many supplies but sacaguwea saved them. Another accident occurred when someone went overboard and got crushed by the boat itself.
FALLS = Mariwether Lewis fell of many cliffs during this journey. Lewis fell 30 feet of a cliff above Missouri river before catching himself on a tree. Lewis and Private richard Windsor found themselves in a bad situation when it was raining and lewis fell 50 feet before landing on a little land island, but Windsor was still dangling on edge until Lewis told Windsor to pull out his knife and pulled himself up.
GUNSHOT INJURIES = only 1 gunshot injurie occurred on this expedition when Lewis and Piere Cruzatte where hunting elk. Cruzatte was near sighted and accidentally shot Lewis. Luckily he had a bad aim. Lewis only had minor injuries.
FOOT INJURIES = Many of the men complained of thorns from cactus like plants puncturing into their mocciasins. Lewis recalls pulling out 17 thorns from his foot one night. Their dog seamen had the same paw problems also.
CUTS AND LASIRATIONS= John Potts cut his own leg with an axe accidentally. Lewis applied pressure to stop the bleeding and sewed him back up, he applied ginger to reduce swelling.
WEATHER = Lewis and Clark narrowly escaped flashfloods and hail. Many of the men suffered from frostbite.
HORSE ACCIDENTS = George Gibson fell while mounting his horse and landed on a sharp object that puncterd his thigh 2 inches deep. Lewis pored a water solution into it to stop bleeding and to help it close up. On June 30, 1806 Lewis's horse fell on a rainey day, he slid down the sharp hill 40 feet until he hit a tree.
